Woman's History Month: "The Mousetrap" by Agatha Christie

“The Mousetrap” by Agatha Christie

In honor of Women's History Month, we will be discussing one of the world's most famous writers - British author and playwright - and her most successful works, The Mousetrap (deemed as the world's longest running play).

According to her official website, going against her mother's wishes to wait she began reading at a very young age. She was homeschooled by her American father, meaning she had a lot of time in which she spent in solitude. By the age of eleven, Agatha had one her many poems published in a local newspaper. After making a bet with her sister, she moved on to writing a detective novel. Among 66 detective stories and short-story collections, Agatha wrote the play The Mousetrap.

Synopsis via Agatha Christie’s official site

The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed.

Let’s discuss!
I have not read or seen The Mousetrap but from what I have researched on the internet, it seems to be an interesting, edge-of-your-seat kind of story. I DO NOT KNOW THE ENDING. I heard that the ending is a secret... for those who have seen the play? Is that true? Anywho. I am totally captivated!

  • Which person in the story did you feel had a substantial growth in character development as the investigation progressed?
  • If you could rewrite the story who would you have be the murderer?
  • Are there any similar stories with the same plot? What sets this story apart from those?
  • If you were in the play, which character do you think would be excellent to play?
  • Does Agatha Christie inspire you as much as she does for me?

I can't wait to hear from you guys! I don't think I have read many mystery books so...What are your favorites? Are there some reads that leave you on the edge of your seat? Let us know!

Happy reading!
xx Kenzie
